According to the CDC, an estimated 50-70 million US adults have sleep, or wakefulness, disorder, and snoring is a common indicator that you are not sleeping well. If you snore or feel tired three out of seven days during your week, we invite you to better understand how we can help. If you have questions, please call us.
What Causes Snoring?
Snoring is caused when air travels quickly through a narrow tube rather than a more broad tube. This fast moving air causes relaxed tissue in the throat to vibrate and cause the sound of snoring.
What is Sleep Apnea?
Sleep Apnea is a type of sleep disorder in which abnormal breathing occurs during sleep. Pauses in breathing that occur with this disorder are called apneas. Sleep apnea can cause interruptions in restful sleep cycles and sometimes lead to serious health consequences. Sleep apnea can be diagnosed with a polysomnogram, aka “sleep study.”
Both snoring and sleep apnea can cause major interruptions during sleep cycles, even worse they can lead to chronic tiredness that can affect one’s quality of life and performance in daily activities. Health consequences are far reaching and affect anything from the heart rate to blood oxygen levels.
Oral Appliance Therapy
Oral appliances are a non-invasive way to treat certain types of sleep apnea and snoring. These devices work by shifting the lower jaw forward and opening up narrow passageways in the throat. The results can be life changing and sometimes lifesaving. The types of appliances used in our office are custom made for each patient. Results are continually monitored and appliances are adjusted in subsequent visits to ensure maximum results. If you have any questions at all, we are here to answer them.
